We are very happy and I shared Claire's words ' At last Argentina is doing the right thing honouring a good poet like you'. Long live Ernesto Kahan and may you be another world famous Argentina sons like Diego Maradona and Lionel Messi!! I can imagine you blushing when reading this. But dear Ernesto, you really deserved it!

INTERVIEW WITH PROFESSOR JOHAN GALTHUNG

INTERVIEW WITH PROF. JOHAN GALTHUNG –  FIRST HOLDER OF

TUN  MAHATHIR  CHAIR FOR GLOBAL PEACE-

 PERDANA GLOBAL PEACE FOUNDATION (PGPF)

 ISLAMIC  INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY MALAYSIA (UIAM)

 7th MARCH 2015 – 10AM.

Siti Ruqaiyah Hashim (SRH) is a free lance writer based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Born in 1930 in Oslo Norway. Professor Johan Galthung(Prof.JG) known world wide as The
Father of Peace Studies started Peace Research Institute Oslo or PRIO in 1959. It’s the world first Peace Studies Institute formed.  Since then, more than 500 Peace Studies centres and schools in universities all over the world established and many of them were with his initiatives and advises . In 1993 he founded TRANSCEND Peace University world’s first online Peace Studies University. Together with it, he founded TRANSCEND International  which is a global network for Peace, Development  and Environment engaged in mediations and researches on peace making and conflicts solving all over the world.

Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s non-confrontational peace principles, five years  before
formation of PRIO,  Johan Galthung published Gandhi’s Political Ethics a book he wrote
when he was only twenty five. Since then, he had authored and co-authored some 150
books, 1600 papers and articles focused on peace and related issues. The non-violent
conflict resolutions expert who wrote ‘The Fall of US Empire – And Then What?’ in 2009
said in Radio Democracy Now (USA) interview few years ago, “ I love the American Republic. But I hate the US Empire. “ talked to this writer few days before Perdana Global Peace Foundation’s (PGPF) recent International Conference on The New World Order A Recipe For War or Peace! His latest research and book Abolishing War and Clash of Culture were launched during the conference.

Professor Johan Galthung was the first holder of Mahathir PGPF Chair for Global Peace in
Islamic International University Malaysia (IIUM) and his tenure ended after the International Conference.

SRH: Prof Johan, Please  tell me more about your being in Malaysia since a year ago and what have you been  doing?

Prof. JG:  I am known as The Father of Peace Studies and maybe by now Grand father or great grand father of Peace Studies.

SRH:   With 150 books?

Prof. JG: Its not the question of what I had done but the fantastic waves of all over the world of Peace Studies (centres). In 1961, there is not even one peace studies school but now we have 500 all over the world. We have to educate people on conflicts solving, peace making and other related issues after so long we had glamorized war. War is bad.

Anyway, when I was invited here in UIAM, there is no slightest interest, no students, no professors, no collegue. So it’s a flop of me staying here. But two things happen  positively:

One is the fact that UIAM is The International  Islamic University of Malaysia.

And secondly, Tun Mahathir and The Perdana Global Peace Foundation-PGPF. They are asking  me to do a study to criminalize war. They have a mock tribunal-basically against US and Israel (on conflicts with Palestine) particularly. And also sitting on Sunni-Shia conflicts.

So I turn myself into research. And two books come out of it:

1)   Abolishing War

2)   The Clash of Culture

3)   The Art of Peace - which I just finished yesterday.

At the conference on Monday these books will be handed to PGPF. So I am happy with the outcome of the researches and the books.  Due to the lack of interest of the University,  I cut off 1 year instead of 2 years of staying here.  The last thing I worked on here was finishing 28 lectures  meant for 14 weeks of one semester on Peace Studies. And it was announced to the students  and only two students turned up one a Turkish another one a Sri Lankan. Not even a single Malaysian. It’s a bit strange about the reception of  the people in the University.

So I make the best of it. Since I’ve got no teaching work to do, I turned to writing books. I am also mediating (conflicts) all over the world in practice. From sitting  in Afghanistan talking to the Taliban and contact with Al-Qaeda, contact with Boko Haram and in Turkey with all the (conflicting ) parties.  I am also sitting with all the ( concerned)  parties in Ukraine. You must sit down and talk (with all parties)  so that all will accept (solutions of conflicts). You must mediate with all of them.

SRH: What do you think of some peace movements organizations efforts especially the NGOs?

Prof. JG:  Some peace movements are too vague and too much  talk. You can have things like United Nations of the World or Global Peace  but you must do very  concrete things. It needs creativity and hard work (not just talk  about it). Only then it will work. It works many times that way anyway.

IPPNW (International Physicians for Prevention of Nuclear War) is very good (effort) to prevent radiation from harming human’s body (and survival) but the conflicts need to be resolved. You must know about peace making, (mediating)  and conflicts solving. No point bringing in a nuclear scientist  (or whoever) into a (any peace) movement because you must know about (the mechanisms of ) conflict solving.

You need to ask:  Mr. Taliban what sort of Afghanistan you would like to see coming into if you are in power? These are the issues you must address and mediate with other groups in the conflict and find an acepted solutions by all. You need to be creative and do hard work and concrete efforts made towards solvingthe problems.

SRH: You had been in Malaysia before and what do you think of this country now?

Prof. JG:  I was teaching in University of Science in Penang from 1974 untill 1978 which is 5 years. I was together with Prof. Chandra Muzzafar who was also in Social Science School with me then. Malaysia was strong during Tun Mahathir’s time. He created Modern Malaysia. Modern Economy of Malaysia.

SRH: About Palestine issue, how long more do you think its going to take and when will it ends?

Prof. JG.  Its coming to an end. Sweden already recognized (Palestine’s sovereignity). Three important parliaments , England, France and Spain are also voting for Palestine. Though its not binding to the governments (decisions), the favour is very much for Palestine. Even the EU Parliament is showing that tendency.  The mood and the support is very clear for Palestine. Things are moving and its very much for Palestine. But Malaysia  should do more for support to Palestine.

Malaysia used the term ‘State Terrorism’  towards Israel and that is really something strong. Though I am not sure the (present)  Prime Minister (of Malaysia) uses that term (also).

And  Obama had muted Netanyahu recently by not wanting to see him.

The ICC (International Criminal Court) in this matter is also moving. If Malaysia could support more  The ICC for Palestine’s (causes ) it will be good. I would say, by 2020 it ( the Palestine-Israel conflict) should be over. Maybe sooner. It will be like the South African scenario after apartheid was abolished.  It will go back to normal (relationship) with the rest of the world.

SRH: Malaysia had been giving a lot in humanitarian efforts towards Palestine.

Prof. JG:  That’s the covert operation. And its very good. But political support for Palestine need more to be done.

SRH: What about the IS (Islamic States) conflicts?Aren't these issues cropping up due to reactions on US policies in Middle East?

Prof. JG: There are many areas  one has to look at. One aspect is what you had said just  now. Secondly, that areas – Syria and Iraq had a very violent history since long ago. Since 4000 years ago during the Assyrian Empire. And from historical point of view, the Ottoman times also was a violent (era). So many hatred (and animosities) are there.

But a Caliph brought peace and unification of that area. So the longing for a Caliph is still there. A Caliph who could unify and bring peace (and greatness) for  the area. And the longing for a Caliphate (state) is a Muslim right that the Western cannot stand against (if achieved).

George Bush (Jr) said God asked him  to democratize Middle East. That’s blasphemy to me! Anybody who talked like that is not being sensical at all (and insulting) to religion.

SRH: Few years back, there were accusations about you of being anti- Semitic because you said the Jews controlled US economy and media.  Your comments?

Prof.JG:  Many years ago, I debated in Qatar  defending the rights of Israel
to exist. Is that being anti-Semitic? I defended (the rights) Israel infront of many Arab League Nations. But I insisted that (Israel) should  go back to the borders of 1967.

US and Israel hold on to the doctrines of ( being) The Chosen People and the Promised Land. But that land is not empty! This cultural alliance which is being in the same way means they have to be strong. That’s why all the mutual support and assistance between
these powers are strong.

I am not prejudiced against Jews. But Wall Street is 70 % controlled by Jews.

American voters wants victory not peace.   I proposed the 12620  points. Which is package of ideas for:

                       1 recognition of Palestine (nationhood)

2 states (solutions) of  Palestine and Israel

6 communities (neighboring) of Lebanon, Syria, Jordan,
                       Egypt, Israel and Palestine.

20 members of co-inhabitant of all (the different races)
                       in the area (Middle East).

But no one coming to the idea of recognizing Palestine.  Because they don’t want solutions  but expansion (that’s what they want).

So a Basel (Switzerland) based Peace Institution suspended me. Though I helped to form that institution long ago.

SRH: Will you come again to Malaysia?

Prof. JG: If I should come to Malaysia again its because someone wants me to have a look at the conflicts.  There are conflicts in Malaysia, not the issues of racisms or seditious. But conflicts. So If I am being asked to look into it, I will come again.

Puisi - Cerita-Cerita Tembok

CERITA-CERITA TEMBOK

1989-Stirling

Sewaktu duduk-duduk di Perpustakaan Mac Roberts

Pasha menerima panggilan dari Prague

Masih ku ingat kata Vaclav

‘Cepat datang ke sini kita akan ke Berlin
Seumur hidup mu kau tak kan menyesal

Melihat cinta merobohkan tembok kebencian

waktu meninggalkan Ramallah

Kerna mengikut suaminya Tariq ke Tebing Barat

sebak ku dalam diam

Mengingat Najwa tidak boleh

balik ke kampungnya sampai bila-bila

semalaman aku tak melelapkan mata

memikirkan pahit-manis cinta Najwa dan Tariq

yang semakin dekat dengan ku rupanya!

THE STORIES OF WALLS

1989 – Stirling

Sitting around with talks in hushed voices

In Mac Robert Library

Pasha received call from Prague

I could still remember Vaclav’s words

‘Come here quickly

We will go to Berlin

For the rest of your life

You will never regret it

Watching love demolishing wall of hatred

Humanity had defeated tanks and missiles!’

2013 – Kampala

Mira Nair spoke from her heart as usual

‘Thank you for the invitation and the honour

But sorry I wont go to Haifa

As long as that ugly wall stands’

Then I whispered to you

How am I going to visit you in hospital?

Because there is a little sentence in my passport

That says I cant go to your country?

Sometimes ago

Watching video clip on Al-Jazerra

Najwa the beautiful young bride

Was sobbing uncontrollably

Leaving Ramallah

As she was following Tariq her husband To West Bank

my silent tears celebrated their marriage

thinking about Najwa who cant go back to her village forever

The whole night I couldn’t sleep

remembering Najwa and Tariq’s sweet- sad love union

becoming close to me.

PUISI-ANTARA TALIBAN-TALIBAN

ANTARA TALIBAN- TALIBAN

Sewaktu Patung Buddha di Lembah Bamiyan dihancurkan

ramailah perwira warisan dunia

menjerit ke seluruh dunia

mengutuk para Mullah dan Taliban

tetapi siapa pun tidak bersuara

bila dron-dron menghancurkan muzium

tapak warisan Babylon

Taman Tergantung

dan segala macam tinggalan Raja Darius

yang tak ternilai harganya

kepada  sejarah  dan warisan dunia

aku bukanlah peminat setia

mereka yang menghancurkan patung Buddha di Bamiyan

mungkin telah lama di tembak seperti Malala

kerna menulis puisi

dan memperkata filem-filem Samira, Hana Makhbalbaf dan

Mira Nair

tapi bukankah keduanya

pemusnah tamaddun dan warisan dunia?

Jadi kenapa George Clooney

dan isteri jelitanya Amal

tidak berkata apa-apa?

many heritage warriors

screamed to the whole world

priceless to history and world heritage

I am not an ardent fan

of those who demolished Buddha statues in Bamiyan

probably had been shot like Malala

for writting poems

and talking about Samira, Hana Makhbalbaf and Mira Nair's films

But arent they all

world civilization and heritage destroyers?

So why didnt George Clooney

say something?

RATIB QALBU SUTUNG UMAR

Dua malam lalu, bertempat di Institut Terjemahan Buku Malaysia Wngsa Maju diadakan malam bacaan puisi 'Ratap Qalbu' sempena pelancaran buku antologi puisi penyair luhur Sutung Umar Rs.

Pernahkah engkau tahu

 Bagaimana ku telan

 Segala bara yang kau tinggalkan

 Hingga kini?

 Pernahkah engkau bertanya

 Bagaimana aku bisa

 Melangkah dengan segala pedih luka

Yang memarut hidup ku Hingga kini?

 Pernahkah engkau sedar

Bahawa separuh dari ku telah mati

 Sewaktu engkau melangkah pergi

Bukan kerna kerinduan kepada mu

Tapi engkau telah campakkan aku

Dalam kancah kekacauan

Oleh laku mu

Hingga aku bertanya

Kenapa dengan diri ku

Hingga kita jadi begini?

Engkau terus menyiksa ku hingga kini

Bukan kerna dendam mu

Tapi kerna kekeliruan diri mu sendiri

Dan engkau tak mampu

Mengakui segala kesilapan mu

Bukan aku tidak mampu

Merakam kesedihaan itu

Tapi

 Cinta ku kepada mereka berdua

 Membuat aku

 Menelan ketulan bara

 Yang kau tinggalkan

 Sepanjang jalan

 Bertahun lamanya

 Ku pilih untuk berkata sekarang

 Kerna tidak ada apa lagi

 Yang menghalang

 Mereka berdua pun sudah dewasa

 Dan kita pun sentiasa tau

 Waktu itu akan tiba juga

 Dan akulah yang berhak bersuara

 Terlalu banyak

 Yang kau lakukan

 Untuk membunuh ku

Tapi Aku tidak juga mati

 Sebenarnya

 Di antara kita

 Siapakah yang lebih tersiksa?

REMEMBERING THAT PARTING

Did you ever know

how I swallowed

the embers you left behind

till now?

Did you ever asked

how I keep walking

with all the pains and wounds

that scarred me

till now?

Did you ever realized

that half of me died

when you walked off

not because of missing you

but you had thrown me

into the mess of your own doing

so much that I kept asking

whats wrong with me

that we become like this?

you kept torturing me till now

not because of revenge

but its the confusion in yourself

and you can't afford

to admit your mistakes

Its not that I cant cast that sadness

but

my love to both of them

made me swallow the embers you left behind

years after you had gone

I chose to say it out now

because nothing stopping me

they both had grown up

and we both always know

that time will arrive

and its my turn to speak

You had done a lot

to kill me

but I did not die

actually

who is more tortured

between us?

Selamat membaca.

                                                    WCP 34 and eco-poetry

                                                    The Lima Declaration

Care for the "last lungs of the world": The Amazon

                                                      By Ernesto Kahan *

In November 2010, I was invited to the Summit of Amazonian Countries. In my message sent by email because I couldn't attend, I repeated what I said in a recent interview published in Greece:

"Our society is in an existential crossroads. On one hand, it is very efficient the use of natural
resources, but on the other, such use is jeopardizing the continuity of life on our planet. On one
hand, new technologies and intensive production systems allow us to obtain an elevation quality
of life for all humanity, but on the other, new conflicts are threatening to use weapons,
especially nuclear which potentially can destroying our civilization and life on Earth.".i

The declaration of Manaus - Summit of Amazonian Countries on Climate Change of
November 26, 2009, affirmed that "Climate change is one of the most critical and urgent
challenges of today, which can only be addressed effectively through of a global effort to which
each country contributes according to their full capabilities in compliance with the principle of
common but differentiated responsibility ... " I want to draw attention to the close relationship
between pollution and the arms race, as well as with the size of the contaminant population. Warbrings death and pollution, but in the case of nuclear war only using 25% of the global arsenal, it will produce what it is called "Nuclear Winter" with the corresponding destruction of life on the planet.

The Amazon rainforest is perhaps the most important biological space necessary for life
on Earth. Its size and biological diversity are essential to the global climate system.
The "Living Planet Report 2014" recently introduced by the World Wildlife Fund
(WWF)ii states that "in 40 years half of the population of various kinds of animals has been
halved: Between 1970 and 2010, populations of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish
around the globe declined by 52 percent".

It is Important to remark than every day, in different parts of the world, 24,000 people
die of hunger (1 every 3.6 seconds, 3 out of 4 are children less than 5 years)
I am going to cite a fragment of the Statement on the 5th Summit
of Nobel Peace Laureates signed in Rome in November of 2004iii. I feel proud that the
organization International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, of which I was vice
president, is one of the signatories:

[…]"We call for the reduction of military expenditures and for conclusion of a treaty that
rejects brute force, respects ethnic, cultural, and political diversity and affirms justice,
compassion, and human solidarity. …" "We, the Nobel Peace Laureates and Laureate
organizations, pledge to work for the realization of these goals.”

That can only be achieved with a pact of harmony, which I understand, is the state of
balance between the components of a system, which by nature tends to entropy. It can be
achieved by tolerance, which is a negotiated agreement between the components (the nations).
Harmony must be the basis for peaceful coexistence among nations. Harmony can never be
eternal and complete, but it is essential at this stage of our civilization for humanity to survive.
On December 1, 1997, The New York Times published a big appeal called "Medical Warning:
Global Warming", which was addressed to the leaders of the world on the occasion of the
Kyoto Summit. The call was signed mainly by leading university professors of public health, and health professionals of the more important health centers and universities of the world, including myself, professor of Tel Aviv University. Israel. The Appeal mentioned that "the
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, made up of more than 2500 of the world's leading
scientists, has concluded that the continued accumulation of greenhouse gases from 1997 to
2010, will, over the next 100 years, warm the planet between 1 to 3 grades centigrade. … The
rate and magnitude of those changes, not seen on Earth for more than 130.000 years (when our
species Homo Sapiens first evolved), may severely affect life on land and in the oceans, will pose
enormous, unacceptable, risks for human health…"

Castellano, María Silvina, in her recent book entitled "La responsabilidad del Estado
frente al daño ambiental. El rol de los juecesiv,(The responsibility of the State against
environmental damage. The role of the judges), said: "We have a fundamental role to demand
justice in the light of new criteria for our right to clean environment and sustainable
development enshrined in our Constitution and reflected throughout the legal system .. . "
We writers and artisans of the written word, have the extraordinary opportunity and
mission of contributing to the clarification and sensitivity of the readers for the respect for life,
pluralism, human rights and protection of ecology.

At the end of the XX Century and beginning of the XXI Century, and because of the
ecological crises, a new poetic movement called Eco-Poetry is expanding and developing.
In the field of art in general, and literature in particular, poetry of the natural poems that
is an essential part of modern literature has become in the XXI Century, due to the ecological
crisis, more an awareness of the ecology in danger than an exaltation to the magnificence of
nature.

The 45th Vice President of the United States from 1993 to 2001 and the 2007 Nobel
Peace Prize recipient, Al Gore, wrote the following poem v

One thin September soon / A floating continent disappears / In midnight sun
Vapors rise as/ Fever settles on an acid sea / Neptune's bones dissolve / Snow glides from the
mountain/ Ice fathers floods for a season / A hard rain comes quickly /Then dirt is parched/ […]

Eco poetry was very important to the great Walt Whitman (USA 1819 –1892) "This is
what you shall do; Love the earth and sun and the animals, […]vi. Whitman can be considered a
precursor of this modern movement.

I think I could turn and live with animals, they are so placid and self-contained; I stand
and look at them long and long.
They do not sweat and whine about their condition;
They do not lie awake in the dark and weep for their sins;
They do not make me sick discussing their duty to God;
Not one is dissatisfied - not one is demented with the mania of owning things;
Not one kneels to another, nor to his kind that lived thousands of years ago;
Not one is respectable or industrious over the whole earth. - Walt Whitman

Some of us, the poets who have in our poems a certain dedication and passion toward
and for the protection of life on Earth, and preservation of the environment, as well as for the
protection of the people and their culture, are mentioning "Gaia" or "Gea", the Goddess of the
Greek antiquity, who is the personification of the mother earth, the equivalent of the Roman:
"Terra Mater" or "Pacha Mama" of the Inca people. An example of such kind of poetry is one of the poems of my book "Ante Requiem":

Be free
people and man
from violence in "Pacha Mama"
Be free man
from the trap of the trapper
from the inequity of his gold
from the death of the intoxicated grass…
Be free!
from the gloom of men - His war

PORT DICKSON

passing by the beach of Port Dickson

I saw a big billboard

red in colour

posted on a wall eight feet high

with words written

DO NOT ENTER.PRIVATE PROPERTY,

so tell me

where else children go

to build sandcastles

or run around

with kites in hands

made from old news paper

on week ends?

PUISI PASCA WCP 34 -PERU -2

TUJUH LAUTAN KU SEBERANGI

Agaknya

menyeberangi tujuh lautan itu

menghakis segala sumpah

 mentera ilmu hitam

yang telah mengikat ku selama ini

                agaknya

                menyeberangi tujuh lautan itu

                menanam hidup-hidup semangat yang dipuja

                serta jampi serapah membelenggu hati

atau mungkin

langkah ku ke daerah itu

adalah langkah sakti

kerna

ada hati tulus  bersih

yang sedang menunggu

menanti jawapan

untuk mengubat luka maha dalam

yang ku fikir tak terubat selama ini

          lelaki ku

          maaf

          kerna membuat engkau menunggu

         tujuh lautan ku seberangi

          untuk membiarkan cinta dipatri

          mendengar sekali lagi

suara nakal mu merantai hati ku

                                                                                       Disember 2014.

KATA UNTUK SEORANG LELAKI

Jangan bina istana untuk ku

Jika niat mu

Mengurung ku di dalamnya

Buat libur mu

Waktu resah kecewa di malam panjang mu

 Jangan sarungkan cincin itu

Jika niat mu

Merantai hidup ku

Lelaki ku

Binalah sebuah pondok untuk ku

Isikan ia banyak-banyak dengan kejujuran

Sarungkan cincin itu

Dengan rantai kasih untuk melilit ku

Ucaplah kasih mu

Jika ia cukup benar

Bahawa itulah yang ada dalam hati mu

Maaf

Aku terlalu tua

Untuk pura-pura tidak mengerti

Rentak tari mu

PUISI PASCA WCP KE 34 -TRUJILLO, PERU

VIVA PALESTINA

Segala soal ku

tidak kau jawab

tapi berbagai yang terjadi

riak bertukar menjadi ombak

ombak semakin hampir menjadi tsunami

tanpa ku sedari

rupanya itulah jawapan mu

                          biarkan detik ini berlalu

                         dalam kesepian panjang  amat indah

                          kerna dalam sunyi begini pun

ku rasakan kehadiran mu di sisi

                          penuh kasih

                          penuh sayang

                          penuh  kemanusiaan

                          serta cinta tanpa syarat

                          sarat termuat

                         dalam redup renung mu

                         dalam getar suara mu

                         dalam nakal bersalut cemburu

ku simpan senyum mu dalam hati ku

ku bawa kemana jua aku pergi

 begitu kata mu

 semusim yang lalu

                           Ah!

                           ini musim cinta mekar agaknya

gemanya semakin nyaring  di  cuping telinga

PUISI UNTUK SEORANG ADIK

Dalam kedinginan pagi -2 darjah

dia mencapai basikal

dan mengayuh keluar

meninggalkan ku

di bilik kecil itu

                     aduh!

                     gigihnya dia mencari kehidupan

ada  titik-titik jernih di tasik matanya

                     dan di kelopak mata ku

                     titisnya mengalir lebih laju

                     ketika berpelukan

                     sesaat sebelum aku melangkah pergi

melambaikan tangan

belum sempat aku terbang

mesej darinya berkata

                          berikan kekuatan kepadanya

                          berikan kesejahteraan kepadanya

setelah Engkau kembalikan dia  ke jalan Mu

Ya Tuhan

terima kasih

kerna pasti arwah ibu aman di sana

adik kecil ku telah menemui cahaya Mu

dan punya kekentalan seribu badang

dan damai di hatinya

terpancar diwajah bersih

oleh bibir yang sentiasa menyebut kalimah Mu

Allahuakbar

MACHU PICCHU

Di puncak ini

aku mencapai awan

di puncak ini

aku mengenggam kasih sayang

                       ku katakan sekali   lagi

aku menggapai awan dan kasih  sayang

lahir dari jiwa  tulus dan luhur
